Eastwind Healing Center is a collective of independent practitioners offering a nurturing environment for health and healing. Providing a full spectrum of complementary and alternative healthcare practices and products, we are committed to accompanying our clients on their individual paths in wellness.

Eastwind Healing Center staff - almost all of it, anyway

Iowa's complete complementary and alternative healthcare practice, Eastwind Healing Center was born as Santangelo & Maurer in 1993, the first truly holistic healing practice in Iowa City. Over the years our skills grew, and we added other practitioners, becoming an association of sole practitioners (not in partnership). In 2002, we decided that a name change was in order. Besides, we were more than Santangelo & Maurer by then.

At Eastwind Healing Center, we consider each of our clients as an individual. Our treatment programs are individualized, and the client has input into treatment components. Our aim is to assist each of our clients in achieving true health at all levels of being -- physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. In addition, health insurance will cover some of our services. Call or email us for details.

Please note: In December, 2006, Michael Santangelo and Candida Maurer sold what used to be Eastwind School. The school and Eastwind Healing Center are now two separate entities, and Michael and Candida are no longer affiliated with the school in any way. Through Eastwind Healing Center, Michael and Candida's primary focus is to provide the highest quality alternative healthcare and education to those in need.

Other Services

Mind/Body Therapy
In this combination of psychotherapy and bodywork, physical and emotional concerns are dealt with as the interactive and intertwined unit they are. Rapid progress is often experienced in both realms when body and mind are approached together.

Non-directive Play Therapy
In this mode of play therapy, the child is offered a safe and consistent environment together with a safe and consistent relationship with the play therapist. All feelings are accepted and are explored symbolically and/or explicitly, depending on how the child or young person is able to use play therapy.

Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
A 4000 year old traditional healing system, Chinese Medicine acts deep and powerfully to correct core patterns of disharmony that can be at the root of many, seemingly disparate difficulties. Herbs, acupuncture, bodywork, energy exercises (such as qigong), and other techniques are used to rebalance the body/mind, bringing inner peace and physical vitality.

Energy Medicine
Working with and in the human energy field, the practitioner helps rectify imbalances that are affecting dunctioning now, or could in the future. These techniques are very effective for problems like chronic pain, headaches, cognitive confusion, detoxifying the energy field, and accelerated healing.

Naturopathy
With the motto "Vis Medicatrix Naturae" (The Healing Power of Nature), traditional Naturopathy utilizes herbs, dietary interventions, bodywork practices, and energywork to address the underlying causes of physical and emotional complaints. The aim is to rebalance the mind/body/spirit, so that innate healing abilities can work naturally and maximally.

Medication Prescribing and Monitoring
Eastwind has two prctitioners who will prescribe and monitor medications, Janeta Fong Tansey MD, PhD, a psychiatrist, and Kristen Richardson MSN, ARNP, P.C., a Psychiatric and Mental Health advanced nurse practitioner. Medications are prescribed only when necessary, and a careful, conservative approach to them is followed. Janeta and Kristen are also available for evaluation of the appropriateness of certain medications for those individuals desiring a consultation.

Reiki
It is our belief that Reiki is one of the basic healing energies. Through its gentle action, the body rejuvenates and clears out blockages. We utilize two lineages of Reiki in our work, the familiar Takata lineage and the deep and powerful Takamori lineage, also known as Reiki Jin Kei Do.

Massage Therapy
Eastwind Healing Center has practitioners skilled in both Asian and Western styles of bodywork. Massage serves as an excellent modality for releasing the pain and restrictions of acute and chronic injuries, and for maintaining health. Massage also improves circulation and removes toxins from the body.

Types of massage we offer:

Craniosacral Therapy
This is a light-touch techniques that utilizes the natural healing rhythms of the body. It, in essence, gives the body permission to correct imbalances in structure. Craniosacral therapy is very gentle, but very effective and powerful. We offer both Upledger's method and Milne's Visionary Craniosacral Therapy.

Clinical Nutrition
Careful and comprehensive assessment identifies areas of nutritional need to restore balance in the body using nourishing foods and supplements. Proper nutrition is foundational to good health.

Medical Intuition and Quantum Clearing
Candida and Michael are trained in medical intuition and quantum clearing. Medical intuition allow the practitioner to receive impressions of difficulties in the body and the energy field. Quantum clearing corrects these imbalances at the point where energy becomes matter, effecting deep and lasting results.
[back to list of services]

Psychotherapy
Traditional psychotherapy is used where indicated to assist in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral change.
[back to list of services]

Sandtray
This is an expressive and dynamic play process that is used by children, adolescents, individual adults, couples, families and groups. It has been described as a "waking dream". Meaningful images, dilemmas, fears, hopes and dreams can be accessed through the sandtray, allowing conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche to interact. The therapist neither analyzes nor interprets the sand-world, but allows the meaning of the play to emerge as the client experiences and shares it with the therapist.

Chiropractic
Gentle manipulation of the spine and the rest of the skeleton results in the most efficient biomechanics and a rectification of nervous system impingements. This method of healing is highly effective for back and neck pain, headaches, and chronic pain.
[back to list of services]

Bach Flower Essences
Flower essences effect change at the spiritual level, though they are formulated with emotional disturbances in mind. A combination of essences is often used to supplement other forms of treatment, and can make transitions from imbalance to health smoother and gentler.
[back to list of services]

Sound Therapy
Practitioners use tuning forks on the body and in the energy field to bring the body back to "harmony." Energy flow is changed in the direction of health. Occasionally, healing sounds are combined with energy exercises. Signature Sound voice analysis is also available to help find and rectify energetic imbalances.
[back to list of services]

Hypnotherapy
This can be a useful adjunct in the treatment of pain and belief system change. Past Life Regression is also available.
[back to list of services]

Structural Integration (Rolf Method)
A series of bodywork sessions designed to reorganize the fascia (connective tissue) from head to toe, both inside and out. Clients report improved posture, greater flexibility and breathing capacity, correction of prohibitive movement patterns as well as significant changes in emotional outlook and self-awareness.
[back to list of services]

Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy
A 90 minute session involving assisted yoga postures, non-directive dialogue, breathing and focused awareness, designed to foster personal growth and healing through the release of restrictive physical and emotional patterns.
[back to list of services]

Authentic Movement
This is a unique approach to self-exploration, self-discovery, and self-expression. It is based on the belief that movement and personal art expression have the power to reveal, heal and transform our bodies and our psyches. Movement and artistic expression act as a mirror, reflecting our physical, emotional and interpersonal concerns. Originally called Movement-In-Depth by its founder, Mary Starks Whitehouse, the method grew from her roots in dance, Jungian studies, and pioneering work in dance/movement therapy.
[back to list of services]

Light Language
Utilizing an ancient science of sacred geometry and color, Light Language is employed to bring about healing. The colored shapes are used singly or in structures called grids. In fact, it can be used to structure reality for purposes like prosperity, improving relationships, protection from disease -- the possibilities are limitless.
[back to list of services]

Distance Healing
Some of the techniques we use in our practice depend in part on the principle of the non-locality of mind. This principle asserts that mind is present everywhere. As such, treatments can be carried out when the client is somewhere else. Reiki, medical intuition and quantum clearing, and light language can all be done at a distance. Often, a prearranged time is set aside for the client to relax while the practitioner does the work. Phone consultations can also be done.
[back to list of services]

Remote Viewing and Dowsing
Once the area of "psychic spies," remote viewing has become a very useful tool for assisting in determining health problems (a form of medical intuition), finding lost objects, making important decisions, even helping to solve crimes and mysteries. Dowsing is more than just looking for water. It is a skill that can be compared to remote viewing with a pendulum. Map dowsing has been used to find ideal building sites, mineral deposits, and anomalous energies. Remote viewing is a non-local skill, while dowsing can be used on-site or at a distance.
